The legendary filmmaker Sergei Parajanov with his Armenian mother Siranush (Siran) Bejanian (Bezhanov, Bezhanian) and the portrait of her husband Iosif (Joseph) Parajanov (Parajanian, Parajaniants). According to a story Parajanov told Vartanov, Siranush had torn the portrait of Iosif in a moment of jealousy. Siranush passed away while Parajanov was in the prison in the Soviet Ukraine in the 1970s. In 1989 Parajanov cast his muse Sofiko Chiaureli (the star of his masterpiece The Color of Pomegranates) to play his mother Siran in The Confession (1990) which survives in Vartanov’s Parajanov: The Last Spring.
