Parajanov/Vartanov on Criterion

The Criterion Collection Blu-Ray/DVD release of Sergei Parajanov’s restored 1969 masterpiece SAYAT NOVA (The Color of Pomegranates) with Mikhail Vartanov’s rare 1969 film THE COLOR OF LAND and Martiros M. Vartanov’s first film, THE LAST FILM.

The restored SAYAT NOVA (The Color of Pomegranates) by Paradjanov premiered at the 67th Festival de Cannes, Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the 52nd New York Film Festival, where Martin Scorsese accepted the 2014 Parajanov-Vartanov Institute Award for championing the restoration of this masterpiece.

THE COLOR OF ARMENIAN LAND (1969) by Mikhail Vartanov hadn’t been seen in 43 years when it premiered in 2012 at the prestigious Busan International Film Festival’s Parajanov/Vartanov retrospective, and it is now available for the first time in 49 years.

THE LAST FILM (2014) by Martiros M. Vartanov was filmed at UCLA on an old Bolex movie camera and 16mm black and white Kodak film. It was a semi finalist at the 41st Student Academy Awards ® and premiered at The Academy ® at LACMA series in Hollywood and Lincoln Center in New York.
