Ara Guler
The legendary filmmaker Sergei Parajanov photographed in 1989 by the great Armenian photographer Ara Guler, “The Eye of Istanbul” (16 August 1928 – 17 October 2018). Guler had also photographed some of the most famous people of the world, including Picasso, Maria Callas, Salvador Dali, Sophia Loren, Dustin Hoffman, Man Ray, Orson Welles, and Alfred Hitchcock. Guler’s other legendary subject who, like him, was Armenian (in addition to the aforementioned Parajanov) was Oscar and Pulitzer winner William Saroyan, whom Vartanov also filmed in 1976 in Armenia. Ara Guler had also photographed Winston Churchill (who was the subject of one of the most famous photographs in history by another famed Armenian photographer Yousuf Karsh).
