Grigory Vartanov

Grigory Vartanov (1939-2010)

Mikhail Vartanov‘s younger brother Grigory (Gregory) was a legendary Soviet boxing champion and coach. He played himself in Villen Novak’s popular Russian detective film Ring (1973), starring Nikolay Grinko who was in Tarkovsky‘s Solaris (1972), Stalker (1979), Andrei Rublev (1966) and Mirror (1975), as well as Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964) by Paradjanov. Parajanov met Grigory in 1967 when the latter was assisting his brother Mikhail Vartanov during the shooting of the documentary The Color of Land on the set of Parajanov’s Sayat Nova. Grigory is also the uncle of Martiros M. Vartanov.
