Grigory Vartanov

Grigory Vartanov (1939-2010)

Mikhail Vartanov‘s younger brother Grigory (Gregory) was a legendary Soviet boxing champion and coach. He played himself in Villen Novak’s popular Russian detective film Ring (1973), starring Nikolay Grinko who was in Tarkovsky‘s Solaris (1972), Stalker (1979), Andrei Rublev (1966) and Mirror (1975), as well as Parajanov‘s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1964). Parajanov met Grigory in 1967 when the latter was assisting his brother Mikhail Vartanov during the shooting of the documentary The Color of Armenian Land on the set of Parajanov’s Sayat Nova. Many years later, Grigory also helped his brother Mikhail with Parajanov: The Last Spring.
