The legendary filmmaker Sergei Paradjanov created not only some of the greatest films of all time, such as Sayat Nova (The Color of Pomegranates), but also many collage masterpieces such as this one with Raphael and Pinturicchio. Another variation of it is less known but is equally stunning. Most importantly, they are not simply beautiful but with profound meaning which Mikhail Vartanov explored in his film Parajanov: The Last Spring.
Vartanov‘s own artworks (below), both from the Soviet and the Hollywood periods, bring a deeper appreciation and understanding as to why Vartanov and Parajanov were compelled to create these exceptional (and rarely seen) works during the periods of forced inactivity in cinema.

This artwork by Vartanov was first exhibited during Busan International Film Festival’s historic Parajanov/Vartanov retrospective.
