Roman Balayan, is a renowned Ukrainian-Armenian filmmaker, and a friend of both Sergei Parajanov and Mikhail Vartanov. Parajanov, Vartanov and Balayan have all won the Russian Academy Awards (for films made in Georgia, Armenia and Ukraine, respectively). One of Vartanov’s revered essays from 1980s, The Unsent Letters, was about about Balayan.
